The City of Aberdeen is the Energy Capital of Europe and a proud member of the World Energy Cities Partnership. The WECP is a key element in our economic development plans; Aberdeen places a high value upon the network of contacts and business development opportunities membership brings to supporting our local energy sector.

As a WECP partner Aberdeen brings a wealth of skills and expertise amassed over four decades at the sharp end of exploration and production in the harsh conditions of the North Sea.

The challenges facing the industry have changed dramatically over the years yet, as ever, Aberdeen’s business and R&D communities have responded with characteristic verve: the sector’s drive and innovation has stimulated pioneering new developments in subsea technology and renewable energies.

Today, forty years on from the discovery of oil in the UKCS Aberdeen’s oil and gas industry is exporting skills, technology and expertise to other oil provinces. The recent creation of the National Subsea Research Institute (NSRI) is testament to the vision and expertise of the Research & Development community in our area providing a long term research and development strategy for the subsea industry. In addition Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF), a not for profit organisation owned and governed by 21 global energy operators and service companies, has been responsible for successfully delivering 135 new collaborative and revolutionary oil field technology projects to the market with direct ITF membership funding of around £39 million. Its key objectives are to identify oil and gas technology needs, foster innovation and facilitate the development and implementation of new technologies.

As ever we look forward to sharing and collaborating with our friends in the WECP. The energy sector plays a key role in the life of region, and is very much part of the fabric of our community.
