City of Port Harcourt, Nigeria

The goal of Port Harcourt is to be the energy hub, not only of Nigeria and West Africa but the whole Gulf of Guinea. Nigeria is the biggest crude oil producer in Africa, and Rivers State with Port Harcourt as its capital as the largest producer of the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory Nigeria, producing 40% and 60% of Nigeria’s crude oil and natural gas, respectively.

Port Harcourt has passed through about two years of militancy and associated criminality that affected not only doing business in the area but the nation’s crude oil production and economy.

Today, militancy has been quelled, amnesty extended to militants and re-orientation and skills acquisition on going. The government is also taking all necessary steps to make Port Harcourt the preferred investment destination, including the design and implementation of the Greater Port Harcourt City area (which includes correcting the distorted old city plan, and emergence of a new city around the Port Harcourt International Airport and the Energy City around the present Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone / Ports).

With internationally rated hotels, conference facilities, residential areas and international airport and sea ports, and its peculiar location at the southern most tip of the country (by the Atlantic Ocean) and so logistically better for deep offshore operations. Port Harcourt is well positioned to be the hub of the oil and gas industry in the region.

Already, the city is host to most International Oil Companies and local and international oil service companies.

Port Harcourt has a rich cultural heritage with many entertainment facilities in place. The recently commenced yearly Carniriv Carnival holding every December is a spectacle to behold.

To fellow World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) member cities, Port Harcourt offers opportunities to be part of the rebirth of a city with literally all facets of development being upgraded.
