City of San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago
San Fernando joined the World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) in May 2004 and hosted the Annual General Meeting in November of that same year. Both events provided the City with opportunities to profile and promote the several benefits that doing business in Trinidad and Tobago can offer:
- A strategic location between North and South America and between North America and Europe
- A stable political environment
- A favourable fiscal regime
- A wealth of experience and expertise in the monetisation of gas and the development of the downstream sector
- Relatively low energy costs
- Sheltered and secured ports
- A highly educated, warm and friendly people
San Fernando is home to many of the companies involved in servicing the local onshore and offshore sectors. The PETROTRIN Refinery, sitting just on the outskirts of the City, serves as a beacon to visitors, who can expect to find a bustling city, filled with attractions. Visitors can travel by car, bus or on the recently introduced water taxis that ply between the City and Port of Spain.
Points of interest include:
- San Fernando Hill, the highest point in the City, which provides a panoramic view of the City and from which, on a clear day, one can see an outline of neighbouring Venezuela.
- Several colonial buildings that dot the landscape of the City. Among those that stand proudly on Harris Promenade are City Hall, San Fernando Magistrates’ Court, the Anglican and Catholic Churches and San Fernando General Hospital.
- Shopping on High Street, the main commercial area in the City and at Gulf City Mall, one of the larger shopping centres in the country.
- Pointe-a-Pierre Wild Fowl Trust, located on the compound adjacent to the PETROTRIN Refinery is a nature reserve and home to several species of birds. It represents a perfect example of nature and heavy industry co-existing in harmony.
